3D Scan to Physical Model – Sam Holland (MRBS) – British Sculptor – Special Project Feature
From 3D Scan to Physical Model – Sam Holland (Background) – Sam studied Fine Art Sculpture at the City & Guilds of London Art School, graduating with a First-Class degree. Following her studies, she moved to Cambridgeshire, where she worked as a tutor teaching life modelling and drawing, alongside offering private tuition and undertaking private sculptural commissions.
In 1994, she relocated to Rochester, Kent, where she established her own studio. Since then, Sam has worked as a full-time professional sculptor, producing a wide range of private and much loved public commissions. She was also elected an ‘Associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors’ (MRBS) in 2001.
Sam is well known for her focus on large-scale sculpture, particularly in bronze and stainless steel, materials well-suited to public art and natural settings. She is also particularly interested in creating works that respond to their environment and which engage with the spaces they inhabit.
Cerridwen Sculpture Project – 3D Scan to Model
We have previously worked with Sam on other smaller projects, but were delighted to be retained once again in respect of this much larger sculpture based on the Welsh mythological character ‘Cerridwen’. This wonderful sculpture by Sam depicts ‘Cerridwen’ in the ecstasy of transforming back from a hen to sorcerer, completing one circle and beginning another.
Our role was to carry out a high resolution 3D scan of a fabulous maquette sculpted by Sam, in order that we could then digitally upscale the model and produce a much larger physical copy (over 9 feet tall not including the cauldron) that could then be hand finished by Sam adding in all the fine detail, texture and colour.

Who is Cerridwen? – Cerridwen (or Ceridwen) is a powerful Welsh enchantress and goddess in Celtic mythology, known as the keeper of the Cauldron of Inspiration (Awen) that grants wisdom, poetry, and transformation. She is a shapeshifter, associated with the underworld, rebirth, magic, and fertility, and central to the myth where her servant Gwion Bach ingests the potion and is reborn as the great bard Taliesin. Modern Pagans revere her as a deity of inspiration, transformation, and the dark feminine. You can find out more about this important mythological character on Sam’s website.
